History
The history of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve blends Ramayana legend, royal hunting grounds and modern tiger conservation. Here is how the Bandhavgarh we visit today came to be.
Visit the fort and moreLegend says the Bandhavgarh Fort, which sits atop a hill, was gifted by Lord Rama to his brother Lakshman for vigilance. The name says it all: Bandhav means brother and Garh means fort.
The fort and the surrounding forest were inhabited for centuries. Under the Maharajas of Rewa the region became a private hunting reserve called Shikargaah. Unrestricted hunting in this period took a heavy toll on the wildlife.
Recognizing the ecological importance of the forest, Maharaja Martand Singh of Rewa played a key role in declaring Bandhavgarh a National Park in 1968. As India’s tiger numbers fell, Project Tiger was launched in 1973, and Bandhavgarh became a Tiger Reserve in 1993, which greatly strengthened its conservation.
The first white tiger ever recorded, Mohan, was captured here in 1951 by Maharaja Martand Singh. This is why Bandhavgarh is so closely linked with the story of white tigers.

Tala is the most popular and has the highest density of tigers, so it is usually the first choice. Magadhi and Khitauli are also excellent and often less crowded. Panpatha is a rewarding buffer-zone option for tigers, leopards and a quieter experience. No zone can guarantee a sighting, so we suggest two to three safaris.
March to June gives the best tiger sighting chances because animals visit waterholes, although it is hot. November to February is cooler and great for birding and photography. The core zones are generally closed during the monsoon (about July to September).
We recommend a minimum of three safaris across two to three days. This improves your chances of tiger sightings and lets you experience more than one zone.
No. Bandhavgarh has one of the highest tiger densities in India, but these are wild animals. Our naturalists use their knowledge of tiger movement and alarm calls to maximise your chances.
